Brownsville, Texas – Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Karch Kiraly participated in the grand opening of the Brownsville Sports Park’s Volley Cove on Thursday night to make the first serve and conduct a volleyball clinic for area youth. The Brownsville Sports Park’s Volley Cove is the first to feature the new Karch Kourt Sand System created by Kiraly in partnership with the Elevation Group of Companies.
“This facility epitomizes exactly what we envisioned when we decided to provide our expertise and design for public use,” said Kiraly. “It just feels great to see these 10 courts standing here for the Brownsville community to use, not just for beach volleyball, but for so much more. I can only hope that NCAA colleges and universities will eventually realize these same benefits through our work with them.”
The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation, in cooperation with the City of Brownsville, constructed, their new 10-court facility using the new Karch Kourt signature sand volleyball system. Volley Cove is designed to be a multisport competition and training facility. All types of sports can be played or trained in the sand including soccer, flag football and tennis. The low impact, low resistance surface is ideal for physical training for just about any other sport. The flexible Karch Kourt pole system allows the net to be easily adjusted from men’s to women’s to junior heights with little down time. The semi-permanent bases allow the poles to be easily removed to create an unobstructed sand surface for sports competitions and training.
“This event is only the first in what we envision being a multi-use facility whether it is for sports leagues or lifestyle activity,” said Tuffy Martinez, Brownsville Sports Park Superintendent. “In addition to hosting national touring series, we look forward to creating a variety of sports leagues to play on our new sand courts.”
“Karch Kourt Sand Systems is a full service court design, equipment and sand supply and construction service company created by a partnership between Karch Kiraly and the Elevation Group of Companies” stated Rick Schanz, managing director of Elevation, “We have combined the on-court experience of the most storied beach volleyball player, Karch Kiraly, with our years of experience producing volleyball tours like USA Volleyball’s US Open of Beach Volleyball and the USA Beach Junior Tour and the Corona Light Wide Open, to create a turnkey system for installing premium sand courts across the country.”
The event featured opening ceremonies with introductions of town officials including: Charlie Cabler, Brownsville city manager, Charlie Atkinson BCIC board chairman, Carlo Hernandez, BCIC board member, William Garza, BCIC board member, David Betancourt, County Treasurer, and Melissa Zamora, City Commissioner.
“This was a fun opportunity to introduce the kids to sand volleyball and meet an Olympic legend,” said Coach Ansgar Hagemann, of Hannah High School “We are thrilled to be among the first to have tomorrow’s stars of beach volleyball participate in the sport with the new Karch Kourt system.”
The inaugural event for the new facility will be May 8th with the U.S. Border Open tour stop of the USA Volleyball’s USA Beach Junior Tour. The tour for boys’ and girls’ beach volleyball teams (no co-ed teams) ages 10-20 will travel the country over 15 weekends, culminating with the USA Beach Junior Tour Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 22nd.
