Q&A With Jessica Brown, Manager, Public Relations

Jessica Brown

Title: Manager, Public Relations

Years at Elevation: 2

Hometown: Calera, Ala.

Hobbies & Interests: Music, movies, arts and crafts, cooking and running. Being outside in general is a hobby of mine - whether it’s eating, exercising or entertaining.

Childhood Ambition: I wanted to be a veterinarian. Growing up in a rural area, I had cats, dogs, rabbits, ducks, etc. I’ve always had a place in my heart for animals.

Best advice you’ve ever received? My grandmother once told me, “Choose a job you love so that you never have to work a day in your life.”

Favorite quote: “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work.” -Émile Zola

First job: I was a kennel worker/vet tech assistant at my hometown animal hospital.

Pet peeves: Mall kiosk hagglers, flat fountain sodas and blank voicemails.

Favorite book/movie: Book: “Anne of Green Gables.” Movie: “Christmas Vacation.”

Favorite local restaurant: eeZ Fusion & Sushi in Birkdale Village.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I really value all the unique learning opportunities this job gives me - going behind the scenes of different trades, meeting brilliant professionals and listening to their stories, and experiencing the inner workings of major events like rodeos, concerts and sled dog races. I never know what kind of environment this job is going to put me in.

What would people never guess you do in your role? Lots of manual labor. We see events through from planning to execution. When it’s go time we roll up our sleeves and set up tents, tables, inflatables, signage, etc. I once sprinted across a venue to rescue a giant character that was teetering in the wind. So that was fun.

Favorite memory at Elevation: My favorite memory is being in Victory Lane with NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 Budweiser team after their most recent win at Darlington Raceway. Being in the middle of all the energy and excitement after a huge, historic win like the Southern 500 is an incredible feeling.

What led you to the marketing industry? My interest in auto racing led me to this industry. Motorsports has been a part of my life since I was in the womb and I wanted to find my place in it professionally. After a lot of research and interning, I knew the PR and marketing industry was my playing field. Being at Elevation has allowed me to expand my repertoire beyond motorsports. It’s been a very rewarding journey.

Advice for aspiring marketing pros? Don’t lose sight of the big picture. It’s not what you do that matters, it’s why you’re doing it.
